Insulation plays a key role in maximising the efficiency of under floor heating.
The use of an insulated tile-backer board will in almost all cases reduce the warm up time and subsequent running costs of the system. They make a significant difference when the system is being used as a primary heat source on an un-insulated floor or where quick warm-up times are desirable such as a conservatory.
Those who choose not to use insulation boards will experience a greater heat loss through their floors as shown in the diagrams on the below.
In new builds floor insulation boards should be considered at the design stage. However where underfloor heating is being installed in a current building, taking up un-insulated floors can prove difficult and instead a better option is to lay insulation boards on top of the floors.
There are a variety of boards on the market, all of which are of a fairly similar high quality design and efficiency. All are designed to meet the meet the needs of underfloor heating and are capable of supporting thin screeds, tiled floors or wood/laminate floors directly.
